Getting more viewers via embedding!

How to get more viewers on your twitch.tv channel?

I've seen this question asked over and over on twitch's subreddit with generic responses.  Here is my view on how to get more viewers watching your stream using embedding.

Basically it involves syndication with embedding your stream on gaming related blogs that you own and operate, also other 3rd parties. Don't have a blog or website? Why not? Get one started on blogger, wordpress or many other places. Its very easy to get something started. This blog is a recent creation and as you can see sidebar there is a embed player advertising my channel. I have embedded my stream so whenever I am live it will show up.

How do you find your embed code on twitch.tv?

Step 1: Go to your stream url, then click on the share button

and it will show a section called, "Share via"

embed button twitch tv

Then you want to click on the purple button listed as embed.

Step 2: A pop up window will display with 2 various ways to embed the video player to 3rd party websites or blogs.

Here is a screenshot of what that looks like on my screen.

Embed pop up window

Using Javascript method is what I post on my websites and blogs.

Here is my exact javascript code:

<script src="https://player.twitch.tv/js/embed/v1.js"></script>
<div id="daopastream"></div>
<script>
var options = {
width: 400,
height: 300,
channel: "daopa",
muted:true,
parent: ["twitch-tv-tips.blogspot.com"]
//video: "{v130023526}"
};
var player = new Twitch.Player("daopastream", options);
player.setQuality("360p");
player.addEventListener("play", function(){
console.log("Twitch tv player is ready");
player.setMuted(true);
player.setVolume(0.00);
});
</script>
If your going to use the above code, you have to make sure to change the channel to your channel's name and also the parent parameter to your websites URL.

Using the iframe method is also available, here is the code snippet.
<iframe src="https://player.twitch.tv/?channel=daopa&parent=twitch-tv-tips.blogspot.com" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen="true" scrolling="no" height="378" width="620"></iframe>

As with the other code, change the channel and the parent name to you own stuff.

Step 3: Take the embed code and post it to your website or blog.

Some additional guides on how to embed to various content management systems.

  • Wordpress - guide on how to put your stream on a wordpress website.
  • Blogger - tutorial on how to embed your stream on blogger / blogspot.
  • Advanced Embed Code options - lists more parameters and settings for embedding.

Other 3rd party sites that you can get your stream embedded on include but not limited to the following.
Anook.com (example), create a account and then link your twitch to your profile, it will show up on your user page and on the frontpage if you have high viewer count.

Raptr.com (example), similar to anook, link your twitch account and it will populate your stream data to your wall.

Goodgame.ru (example), I managed to get help with a viewer who speaks/reads russian in order to get posted here, but again another place to embed your stream even thou its a foreign language it doesn't matter.

Facebook / Twitter,  Twitch use to be embeddable on both of these social media sites, but something changed and it doesn't work as it use to but never-less its still a good idea to post your stream on your twitter and facebook social media pages. It will create a link back to your stream and hopefully in the future the embed stream feature will come back again so people can view the stream directly from inside facebook or twitter.

Update 2/3/2018 - You can embed your stream on Twitter now, follow the link for the guide writeup.

Update 5/7/2018 - Selective Gamepedia wiki's automatically embed the top stream on the bottom of their content pages.

There is no way to embed a live stream on Facebook, the only way to get a stream embed on facebook is using their streaming service.

There is also other sites that automatically pull information from Twitch's API for channels.
Just being in a certain game directory for a while will get you listed on these types of sites.  Here is a example, this website (site removed no longer active* updated 3/18) pulls streams that have streamed minecraft. As you can see it still has my stream embedded even thou I do not currently stream minecraft. This is one of many aggregators that do exactly this sort of a thing but for other games and niche's. Being listed on these types of sites helps out also even if its a viewer here and there.

See more: 3rd party aggregators list - recently updated on 1/12/2023

Other things to consider are viral bombs, a term I made up recently.

A viral bomb is when you are doing something very unique that gets the attention of many 3rd parties which then others pick up with and syndicate out. Example of a recent viral bomb that happen to my streaming channel was during a eve online streaming session covering a large player created battle involving thousands of players from all over the globe. Polygon picked up on the battle and created this article which before the update included a embed of the stream. Polygon is syndicated on many other sites, so my stream was then also embedded on many other websites. Other sites that ran the story & embed: PCGamer, MMORPG, PCGamesn, Yahoo Games + many others. What did this do for the channel? Hit record number of viewers for that day and continued higher viewer counts for the rest of the week. Even thou this event happened in april, the embeds are still there and this still is providing viewers.

Downside of having a strong embedding strategy.

One downside of having a massive amount of embed viewership is being accused of viewbotting. Many people will mistakenly assume you are viewer botting because of the imbalanced of the chat to view number ratio. Lucky for you these type of people are very simple to ignore.

See more: How legal viewbots thrive is a false narrative

(Update 2/3/2018 - If you want to take a peak at what type of hate may occur if you have a strong embedding strategy - check the following blog posts: With success comes hate2 curious partners, Berry Nice)

And do not worry if these random people are going to report your channel, embed viewership is tracked and logged. Both Twitch and broadcasters can view embed stats in the dashboard. Just in case you have no idea how to find that sort of information here is how to see that sort of intel.

Go to your dashboard, click on stats then switch the group to URL check "Views from Outside Twitch (Top 10)", this will then show you the root domains of all the sites that have your channel's embed on.

Embedding gone wrong, watch out for this!

How a 3rd party website is using the Twitch embed player in a very wrong way. Going to showcase what you should look for if you ever notice any external source popping up in your analytics section on twitch.

You can see if any 3rd party websites are embedding your twitch stream on either the channel analytics page or the stream summary section. Basically, go to your Dashboard > Insights > Click on either Channel Analytics or Stream Summary.  Both have a section called "Where did my views come from?" which then has a link to "View details", make sure to click on that to see the data.

If all goes well you will get a page that has the following type of section:

views from outside twitch
"Views from Outside Twitch" lists domain urls that have a Twitch embed player showing your stream. If you see yourself receiving a massive amount of views from this section its probably worth some time to investigate the sites to see how they are using the Twitch embed code.

Here is something I recently noticed that was happening in the "New World" game directory from a 3rd party website.

2 Embeds, one hidden, one visible

This screenshot has been censored so the 3rd party website and the embedded Twitch streamer isn't viewable.

If you go to this website right off the bat you will think nothing sketchy is occurring.   Its a guide for a mmorpg and under the main content is a Twitch embed player that is set to Autoplay=False which means its not auto playing the live stream as you enter the page.

But this same webpage if you press F12 (which loads up DevTools on chrome) shows a different story.

I have highlighted 2 twitch embeds on the screenshot.

The red highlight is a hidden iframe with a twitch embed everything code that is set to autoplay=true.

The blue highlight is the visible iframe with a normal just twitch video player embed that is set to autoplay=false.

Other notes, this website has some extra sketchy stuff with refreshing the ads and also the red highlight hidden iframe.  So every couple of second the Twitch embed everything iframe is being reloaded in the background hidden from the users who are consuming the content on this page.

A hidden iframe with a Twitch player embed is against the Twitch developer service agreement.

See the terms here: https://www.twitch.tv/p/en/legal/developer-agreement/

If you notice this happening to your stream channel via some 3rd party website, report it to Twitch.

So you have to ask yourself why is this 3rd party doing this?

This 3rd party appears to be using this tactic to advertise and possibly gain influence with streamers who are invested in New World.

The 3rd party has a new world website that the streamers are using on their channel.

So they pick the channels that are showing off their New World site, embed it so that streamer is higher on the Twitch New World directory which then may lead to more people seeing their website which in terms generators more web traffic for them.

Twitch Developer Agreement - "You may not create embeddable experiences in exchange for any compensation (monetary or non-monetary, directly or indirectly) from a content provider on a site or service that the content provider does not own or operate."

If the streamer checks to see whats going on via their "Views from Outside source", and goes to the other non new world website that's promoting their channel, at first glance it will be the visible twitch player embed that is paused. These streamers most likely have no idea of the hidden iframe, some of them probably don't even know they are being embedded.

Additional note on this case.

  • The Twitch Embed Everything code, why do they use that in the hidden iframe? Well here is a super secret tip, because it effects Twitch algorithm for "recommended channels" vs just having a Twitch Video player.

Recheck video clip embeds!

Updates to Twitch Video Embed Coding, requires recheck of video embed pages since previous embed code will no longer work.

If you are a long time Twitch broadcaster and have been embedding video clips to a blog or a website its time to recheck all those pages. The <object> flash embed will not work anymore and you have to use the new video clip embed code.

Here is what the old Flash video embed code looks like:

Click on image to enlarge

You will need to switch it out to the new code found here:
https://dev.twitch.tv/docs/v5/guides/embed-video/

Here is the snip that I'm currently using for embedding video clips to my blog.

<script src= "http://player.twitch.tv/js/embed/v1.js"></script>
<div id="{PLAYER_DIV_ID}"></div>
<script type="text/javascript">
    var options = {
        width: 570,
        height: 350,
        video: "{v47183494}"
    };
    var player = new Twitch.Player("{PLAYER_DIV_ID}", options);
    player.setVolume(0.5);
</script>

If you want to use this code you will have to change the width, height sizes and in the video: section the clip ID # which I made bold. In order to find your clip ID number, go on Twitch and use their search functionality.

Here is a screenshot of me looking up the clip ID from the video in the old embed screenshot above. Take note of the old embed code for flashvars it shows title=, use that information there to search for the clip id numbers.

Click on image to enlarge

Once you find it on the search panel, click on it and you should see the clip id in your URL path. From my example it shows "twitch.tv/daopa/v/47183494". Replace all the numbers, switch out the old code for this new code and your good to go!

Tip: New Embed Video code includes a auto play feature which will start up another video as soon as the one listed is over. This is why you see on the video of Twitch.tv so many past broadcast showing up. The default next auto play video is last broadcast video the streamers have done. I personally hope they switch this to highlights instead of past broadcasts by default.

CEO Clarifies New Embed Policy: Fostering Meaningful Engagement

In a recent conversation with the Twitch community, the CEO of the popular streaming platform, Twitch, was asked to provide more details about the new embed policy. The user inquired about how this policy might impact their use of the feature on a website they own, particularly in the context of their focus on a specific game they also stream. They expressed gratitude for the feature but sought clarity regarding the platform's goals moving forward.

twitch embed code

The CEO's response offered valuable insights into the intent behind the new embed policy: "the focus is, if you have a lot of people coming to the website and part of what they're doing is engaging with the content on the website which you are embedding and that is a meaningful portion of the website, then that is a appropriate use of embedding, what we are trying to capture is where people are coming to the website for purpose x and there's a small autoplay with no audio on the side they hardly even see, because the reason they are there is just to interact and there is large amount of people doing it, if you are one of the people, we are going to contact any of the sites we are doing this with, so you will be contacted if this is a issue, if your a small site then I suspect it wont be a problem" -source

This statement underscores the importance of user engagement and meaningful integration of Twitch content on external websites. It signifies that Twitch is keen on maintaining a balance between the use of the embed feature and the quality of engagement it fosters.

For years, Twitch's embed feature has proven to be a valuable tool for streamers and website owners. It enables the seamless integration of live or recorded Twitch content into their websites, enhancing user experience and promoting interaction between the streamer's community and website visitors. This is particularly relevant for streamers who have a dedicated focus on a specific game or theme.

The CEO's explanation goes further by highlighting the platform's concern regarding autoplay videos with no audio that may distract users from their primary reason for visiting a website. Twitch aims to address cases where these autoplay videos are prevalent, potentially overwhelming the user experience. The CEO mentioned that Twitch would contact websites engaging in such practices, indicating their intention to maintain the quality of user interaction.

However, the response also provides reassurance to smaller website owners, suggesting that the new embed policy might not be an issue for them. This suggests that Twitch's focus is primarily on addressing instances where the user experience is significantly affected, particularly on larger websites.

In conclusion, the CEO's response highlights Twitch's commitment to improving the quality of user engagement, especially when it comes to embedding Twitch content on external websites. The platform seeks to ensure that the integration of Twitch content adds value to the user experience rather than detracts from it. For website owners who genuinely enhance their visitors' experience by embedding Twitch content, the new embed policy is not likely to be a concern. It demonstrates Twitch's dedication to maintaining a positive and engaging environment for its users while acknowledging the diverse ways the platform is utilized.

Powerful Embedding Promotion

How embedding can be used to promote big events for your Twitch channel.

This past weekend Twitch had a major Overwatch League event and I noticed some of the various ways they used embedding advertising to promote the channel. For those of you who are not familiar with what embedding means its basically taking the channel video stream player and showing it externally outside of Twitch. A good example of embedding can be seen here on this blog, on the sidebar I embed my Twitch channel in the advertising section. You can also include chat as its own embed if you wanted to show that off.

So lets start with reddit, on numerous subreddits during the event they had a advertisement going which showed the stream as a embed. Here is a screenshot:

overwatchleague stream on reddit
This would show up as a reddit promoted post and as users went to the subreddits that had this advert going, they would be able to watch the stream inside of reddit.

Next up and most likely one of the best embedding options Twitch has in their portfolio is gamepedia. Here is a screenshot of the OverwatchLeague channel being embedding across the majority of the gamepedia wiki network.

overwatchleague stream on gamepedia
Even thou the event is over with that embed is still occurring which is extremely helpful when looking at how much channel views generation its generally doing. Lets take a quick look at some basic stats for this channel.

OverwatchLeague Stats, Followers, Views
The event took place on the 27th and 28th of July, on the screenshot I've added 2 black dots. Now look at what happened on Sunday, over 2 million views on a offline stream. And continued on to Monday another 1.2 million views mostly generated by Twitch's embedding of the channel on gamepedia. How interesting to see a big bulk of the views coming from embedding promotions outside of Twitch.

One more place that I've seen in the past Twitch used to promote a special event was on imdb. IMDB is owned by Amazon, its a movie-actor type of a database lookup website. I forgot to check to see if they had any promotional embed for the Overwatchleague channel.  But here is how they used it during a Call of Duty Black Ops announcement event.

Call of Duty Black Ops IMDB Embed

This was on the frontpage, top fold of the layout showing the channel as a embed.

Most likely they did additional promotion on facebook, twitter and other places but I didn't dig that deep. On facebook they do not allow 3rd party embedding, but on Twitter you can embed your stream.

Overall this shows how powerful embedding advertisement can be to promote your channel on Twitch. Check out my "How to get twitch viewers", guide for ways you can start taking advantage of embedding and other various tips that I have learned over the years of streaming.

Update 8/15/2018 - Noticed another embedded stream on r/twitch promoting Call of Duty, unlucky for them having a MATURE Filter enabled prevented the stream from autoplaying.

Advance Embed Code options for Twitch

Advance settings for embed code usage for Twitch streams.

Here are some additional options for use when adding embedding code from Twitch. This code includes many options that will be explained below.

<script src="http://player.twitch.tv/js/embed/v1.js"></script>

<div id="player">
</div>
<script type="text/javascript">
  var options = {
    width: 300,
    height: 250,
    channel: "daopa",
    parent: ["twitch-tv-tips.blogspot.com"]
    //video: "<video ID>",
    //collection: "<collection ID>",
  };
  var player = new Twitch.Player("player", options);
  player.addEventListener("play", function(){
  console.log("Twitch tv player is ready");
  player.setQuality("360p");
  player.setMuted(true);
  player.setVolume(0.00);
  });
</script>

Options:
Channel: "Enter your Twitch Channel name" - this is self explained.

When you see // this blocks that line from being read. So if you want the embed code to show just a stream to block the other 2 (video / collection).

video: "<video ID>",

If you want to embed a video, put // in front of channel and collection then add in the video ID as this format "{95561021}"

To get your video id, go to your dashboard, then click on Video producer. Find the video, click on it and it will show you the numbers in the video URL section on the left of the pop up screen.

Copy the same steps from video for embedding a collection.

If your stream has transcoders you can change the default auto quality option to a specific value.

  player.setQuality("360p");

Options include 160p, 360p, 480p, 720p, 1080p

  player.setMuted(true);

How to make your embed player start up muted or not.

Buying reddit ads to promote streamers

Twitch buys reddit ads promoting streamers

So while visiting reddit this morning, I have seen a promoted thread by 'twitch' which says the following:

"I'm Nick Eh 30, a Canadian-born professional Fortnite streamer & creator. I'll be doing an AMA over in r/FortNiteBR at 1:30pm EST on 11/14. Get your questions ready, please and thank you!"

If you click on the link, it sends you to this URL:

https://www.twitch.tv/?rdt_cid=2754764246642879261

Which is odd because it doesn't send you to the subreddit nor to the Nick Eh 30 twitch page. I don't think I have seen any reddit ads similar to this before done by 'twitch'.  This maybe a new campaign push for Twitch using reddit ads to bring in more visitors over to the twitch platform. I will post up any other new twitch ads if I come across them on reddit.  If you happen to see anything unique in this front, please fill free to comment below. I think this is really interesting that twitch is pushing this way for advertising.

Another Ad from 'twitch" but its 22 days old can also be viewed in different subreddits.

Both Ads focus on the fortnite game and fortnite streamers. This ad was a video, didn't appear to have any upvotes and no comments.

The URL sends you to the Twitch but also has tons of extra parameters.

https://www.twitch.tv/?%243p=a_reddit&_branch_match_id=723473051234974098&ttid%3Deab80f788b=&utm_campaign=Mediahub_REDDIT_Invite_RotationalMedia_Tracker&utm_medium=paid%20advertising&utm_source=Reddit&~campaign_id=762653270706564461&~creative_id=765558173245671464

What is interesting here is the "Mediahub" parameter. Mediahub is a AD buying and planning agency. It appears twitch is using this company to advertise the platform across different websites and social media. The streaming platform war is starting to heat up and 2020 is going to be a very deciding year for all the platforms in this space.

11/22/2019 - Update on this post, another Twitch Reddit ad that is embedding the live stream of a certain streamer.

This is a really interesting ad because its doing a embed and not a image or video.  The streamer's live view count showed over 74,000+ at certain times. If they continue this embed ad and consistently use the "Lirik" channel as the embed, expect this channel views to compound higher.

Checking 3rd party stats, the "Lirik" channel generally has 100k to 180k video views. During this reddit ad embed, the video views has increased to 1.3 million views and followers for that day also tripled.

More Twitch Streamers have autoplaying embed ads on reddit, check out the following screenshots:

CohhCarnage

I didn't manage to get the screenshot during its live session, but this is also interesting to note here.  The ads are hardcoded with the streamer link, its not dynamic switching to other live streamers.

Nickmercs

DrLupo

Annemunition

Nickeh30

Jericho

There was also a ad for "Timthetatman" but I didn't manage capture that screenshot. This is pretty interesting list of streamers to pick from out of the platform. Tim's stream is marked as mature, so when that Ad with the autoplaying embed shows up, its a black screen pop up that people need to click in order for the stream to start up.

Twitch is spending alot of money on these reddit ads, and its a mix of general twitch ads and these focused autoplaying embeds for a handful of streamers.

------------

Update to this posting 11/26/2020

Just noticed another streaming ad on reddit but this time it was FB Gaming advertising.  Here is a screenshot of the ad post on reddit.

How legal viewbots thrive is a false narrative

The Truth About Twitch Embeds: Real Views or "Legal Viewbots"?

There's a persistent myth floating around the streaming world that has creators, analysts, and even some big-name YouTubers fired up. They point at certain channels and declare their viewer counts inflated by what they call "legit viewbots" or "legal viewbots." The culprit? Simple embeds of Twitch streams on third-party websites. But is that really the same as botting? Spoiler: it's not. And the double standard here is glaring.

Watch any of those viral breakdown videos and you'll see the same setup: They pull up the World of Warcraft Twitch directory, zoom in on Asmongold's massive numbers, and contrast them with smaller or mid-tier channels like Method. The claim? One is pure organic hype, the other is propped up by sneaky embeds. It's a neat narrative, but it's also flat-out wrong. Blanket judgments like this ignore how Twitch actually works and who benefits most from the platform's built-in visibility tools.

If we're being honest and following the logic these critics lay out, then a whole bunch of completely normal Twitch features suddenly become "viewbots" too. Think about it:

  • The front page carousel that pushes top streams to millions of eyes
  • Auto-hosting and hosting features that funnel viewers automatically
  • Raids that send entire audiences from one channel to another
  • Drops campaigns that reward viewers for tuning in

These mechanisms have helped build some of the biggest careers on the platform. The biggest channels didn't get there in a vacuum, and pretending otherwise misses the bigger picture.

Take Asmongold as a perfect case study. Back in one of his record-breaking streams a few years ago, he shared his dashboard stats publicly. The numbers were eye-opening.

Look closely at the stats breakdown and you'll see a massive chunk of views coming from "external" sources. According to the very logic some critics use, that should count as "legit viewbots." Yet no one bats an eye when it happens for the platform's biggest names. The truth is, external views have always been part of Twitch's ecosystem, and they still are in 2026.

Viewbots vs. Embeds: Two Completely Different Things

Here's where the conversation always goes off the rails. Critics love to mash these two concepts together, but they're apples and oranges.

A viewbot is automated software that opens fake connections to a stream. It tricks Twitch's player into thinking a real person is watching, pumping up the numbers without any actual human behind it.

An embed, on the other hand, is a real Twitch video player placed on a legitimate webpage. A real visitor lands on that site, sees the stream playing, and consumes the content just like they would on Twitch itself. No automation. Just genuine eyeballs.

Yet somehow these get lumped together in the same breath. It's misleading at best and harmful at worst, because it discourages the exact kind of cross-promotion that could help smaller creators grow.

Chat Activity, Followers, and the Real Story Behind the Numbers

Another favorite talking point: "Their chat is dead, so the viewers must be fake." This one falls apart fast when you understand how embeds actually work.

When a site embeds a Twitch player for promotional or content purposes, they almost never include the chat window. Why? Because the goal is usually clean video playback, not full social interaction. Visitors are still watching the stream in real time. They're just doing it without typing in chat.

That doesn't make the view any less valid. It just means the metrics look different. Content is still being consumed, and that's what matters for building an audience over time.

What Twitch Actually Says About Embeds in 2026

Twitch has clear, official rules around embedding their player, and they've held steady even as the platform evolves. Here's the current reality straight from their developer documentation:

Key requirements that still apply today:

  • The embedded player must be at least 400x300 pixels — no tiny 1x1 hidden frames allowed.
  • Embeds must use approved player elements and can't be obscured by other page content.
  • Domains need proper SSL certificates and the required "parent" parameter for verification.
  • You can't simply buy or sell embed placements on unrelated high-traffic sites unless you own and operate them. Twitch can (and does) revoke access for non-compliant use.

These rules exist to keep things fair and prevent abuse. But they also leave plenty of room for legitimate growth. A gaming blog, news site, or community forum can embed a stream and drive real, engaged viewers back to Twitch. It's the same model YouTube has used for years with massive success.

Why Twitch Needs More Smart Embeds, Not Fewer

Here's the part the critics miss: Twitch's growth depends on creators and partners building content around streams, not just inside them. Billions of web pages embed YouTube videos and send traffic right back to the platform. Twitch could use more of that same energy.

Quality embeds on relevant sites act like digital billboards. They expose streams to new audiences who might never browse the Twitch directory. They create discovery loops that benefit everyone from huge channels like Asmongold down to up-and-coming creators who finally get their shot.

Of course, there's a line. Hidden autoplay embeds on spammy pages or coordinated campaigns designed purely to game the algorithm cross into questionable territory. But painting all third-party embeds with the same brush ignores the real value they bring.

If you're a streamer wondering how to grow ethically in 2026, focus on creating content worth embedding. Partner with sites that align with your niche. Encourage fans to share your stream responsibly. And remember that sustainable growth still comes from authentic connection, not shortcuts.

The next time you hear someone dismiss a channel's numbers because of embeds, ask yourself: Are they really complaining about fake views, or are they just uncomfortable with how the platform actually levels the playing field? Real views from real people watching real content will always beat bots. And smart embeds help make more of those moments possible.

Embedding clips on twitter

Guide on how to embed twitch clips onto twitter.

So you want to put a twitch clip on twitter as a embed? Here is a simple way to do it by downloading the clip and reuploading it into twitter.  This method can also apply for facebook pages. So if you want to upload clips onto both twitter and facebook, substitute step 3 with posting on facebook, its very similar.

Step 1.

Go to the clips section on the dashboard and select clips of my channel.

Clips section on dashboard

Here is a URL shortcut ( https://dashboard.twitch.tv/u/STREAMNAME/content/clips/channel )  to this section, just make sure to insert your channel name in the STREAMNAME spot.

Step 2.

Click on the download button next to the clip you want to save. Make sure to save the video clip to a location you can easily find such as your desktop.

Clips download button

Step 3.

Now that you have your video clip downloaded, you can use it to upload into twitter, which will create it as a embed. Go to twitter, then to tweet creation window and click on 'Add photos or video' button, select the video clip file and upload it. Write out a tweet description with your hash tags and tweet it out.

twitter tweet window with video embed

Update - Twitch now has the correct twitter card information for clips, so it automatically embeds and links back to your twitch channel. You can use the clips URL and just put that into a tweet and it should work. So you will have to decide either on downloading and re-uploading or just using the share to tweet link.

I recommended to keep downloading your clips and then uploading them into twitter.  Using twitter's video system is better for growing and discovery opportunities on that platform. Social media platforms like facebook and twitter generally rank content better if its on their website, not embeds or links to other sites.

With Success comes hate

Everyone knows the saying with success comes hate right? Well here is how its happening against my small channel on twitch.

The main conduits typically seems to be on reddit, for me since I'm primarily a EVE Online streamer it would be r/eve.

Here are some examples of recent targeted hate towards myself and my channel.

r/Eve/comments/51n22u/gf_horde/d7dalic/

r/Eve/comments/5jrwjl/lets_watch_some_streamers_on_twitch_wait_what/dbileqw/

r/Eve/comments/5wii5g/every_time_this_streamer_streams_he_gets_over_500/

The common theme from all the attackers is viewership numbers. If I had a total of 10 viewers and 8 of those were from a external embed no one would care. But now since I'm more successful and averaging 100+ viewers all the time, more focus is coming my way. People are trying to figure out whats happening, why I have more viewers and are quick to assume things.

My approach to streaming is also very different from what you typically see on twitch which may add to the problem. I do not attempt to be a personality type of a streamer. My focus is being more of a support type of a stream for the games I play in a chill / relaxing setting. Additionally I aim to have good video quality, limited overlays, no gimmicks, limited voice commentary but huge chat interaction. If anyone asks questions it generally gets answered in the chat very quickly by me.

Since I've been going more full time with streaming I utilize embedding to advertise my stream across my portfolio of websites. My twitch stream runs 24/7 so its a great supplemental to my video game blogs and to this twitch guide site. Embeds get counted in the total live viewer number. Their is no separation between twitch site viewers and external embedded viewers.

Which leads to a huge lack of understanding when it comes to embeds. Many of the hater's kept calling it inflation or fake views, some kinda understand it but then say its cheating the system. I attempt to explain it but for some no matter how much you disclose and show examples they don't seem to care, they default and will continue to say its fake viewers. There is nothing fake about embedding, a person has to be there to generate a view.

Another thing a majority of people are very clueless about is the mere fact that anyone can take a embed code from any channel and post it up somewhere. I offer a very good example here (check viral bomb section), one of the biggest video game websites ran a story and featured my channel's embed on it. And guess what? That website has a extreme amount of affiliates who take their content and repost it. Over the many years of streaming, this type of event replicates, gets compounded and every little bit of that gets added up into the view count.

The salt, the jealously from other streamers fan base was also rampant on the reddit threads. People think being in the top spot in a game directory is the golden key to growth or something? There was even other streamers complaining about my stream on some sections like I'm the reason they are not getting viewers!

Here is a example of a EVE Online Streamer Erstschlag targeting my ellatha website which hosts my eve online fansite.

Erstschlag streamer

They are attempting to get their community to install a web browser blocker so they don't go to my eve website.

I've been streaming since 2009, been a content creator since 2000, thousands of hours have laid the foundation for what I have today. If you are a streamer and see other streamers success and numbers as some sort of a competition, your wasting brain power and time on something you cant control. Focus on what you can control, you, your brand, what makes you different. Try out different things, see what works, what doesn't. Need ideas? Welcome to my Twitch tips blog - many good guides and information available here.

Let me close out and say thanks for all the people who supported and defended my channel against the haters! Much appreciated!

Undefined showing up in stats

What does undefined mean when you are looking at Twitch.tv URL Videoplay stats?

For the longest time I have been wondering what undefined is when you are looking at Video Plays by URL filter for stats on the dashboard. And it turns out it was really simple to figure out what exactly it was by using the other filters.

Here is a screenshot of the Video Plays by URL set.
  • player.twitch.tv: 500
  • undefined: 40
  • www.twitch.tv: 20
Now here is another screenshot of the exact time frame but instead of by "URL", its by "Player Type".

  • embed: 500
  • android: 40
  • site: 20
As it turns out, Android matches in both sections, so when you are checking by URL, the undefined really means android users i.e. Mobile.

Undefined issue solved, now to the player.twitch.tv problem.

The URL stats use to show domain names for all the different websites that had your stream embedded on but due to changes to the embed code its now showing everything as player.twitch.tv.

I have made a suggestion on twitch's uservoice section for a additional parameter we can add to have some sort of tracking of numbers from the various embed sites. Lets see if that gets any traction!

[ 2017.02.25 22:22:41 ] Berry Nice > on every website
[ 2017.02.25 22:22:45 ] Berry Nice > which gives you fake viewers
[ 2017.02.25 22:22:49 ] DaOpa > People consume my website outside of twitch
[ 2017.02.25 22:22:55 ] Berry Nice > i seriously doubt it
[ 2017.02.25 22:23:00 ] DaOpa > Embed is not fake viewers
[ 2017.02.25 22:23:10 ] Berry Nice > i dont know how many times i opened your shitty stream by mistake and muted it
[ 2017.02.25 22:23:14 ] Berry Nice > it's totally fake
[ 2017.02.25 22:23:22 ] Pax Sex > Berry Nice take the time to read the info bellow his stream, check his website and piss off

[ 2017.02.25 22:23:40 ] Bon Shardani > can u kick him out of ur room?
[ 2017.02.25 22:23:41 ] DaOpa > I disclose everything
[ 2017.02.25 22:23:42 ] Pax Sex > holy shit sick of these people hating a streamer because he has viewers, just move on to a channel you like
[ 2017.02.25 22:23:48 ] DaOpa > You know what your prob is, its either
[ 2017.02.25 22:23:54 ] DaOpa > A- ur a fail streamer
[ 2017.02.25 22:23:55 ] Berry Nice > it's cause it's fake viewership to get to the #1 spot on twitch
[ 2017.02.25 22:23:56 ] DaOpa > or
[ 2017.02.25 22:24:03 ] Berry Nice > drowning out better content
[ 2017.02.25 22:24:10 ] DaOpa > B- you like / fan of someone else, and you have a thought
[ 2017.02.25 22:24:17 ] DaOpa > what i do is hurting them in some fashion
[ 2017.02.25 22:24:19 ] Berry Nice > this guy is literally doing nothing but afking in space with no mic

[ 2017.02.25 22:25:13 ] Berry Nice > yeah there is a reason he only has AT BEST 30 viewers

[ 2017.02.25 22:30:00 ] Berry Nice > is to go to twitch

[ 2017.02.25 22:30:05 ] Berry Nice > if i did that for eve and you
[ 2017.02.25 22:30:05 ] HurrpaDurp Chelien > ever heard if bjorn bee?

[ 2017.02.25 22:31:19 ] Berry Nice > and it's just boring
[ 2017.02.25 22:31:23 ] Berry Nice > it's the top because of fake viewership

Competition mentality

Streamer Vs Streamer - Do you believe you are competing against other streamers for viewers?

Here is a recent reddit post against my channel fueling this sort of a competition mentality.

This reddit user doesn't like that I embed my stream on the sidebar of websites that I run. They say because of having the stream embed its creating a unfair boost and is hurting other streamers.

Here is a great example of why you shouldn't think streaming is any sort of competition from one of the biggest entertainers of all time in Las Vegas, Wayne Newton.

Video Interview from Fox News; Your World with Neil Cavuto.

Go to timestamp 27:15

Quote from the interview:
Wayne Newton, "There is not the competition between the performers that people would assume, it would be a logical aftermath of that, the truth of the matter is, the more the big stars come here, like those that you have mentioned, the better it is for all of us, because people will see the show they came to see, if it be one of them or me or whomever and then they say who do we go see next. So the whole town and the whole entertainment industry really derive a great benefit from that talent being here."

Don't fall into the mind trap of thinking you are in a competition against other streamers for viewers.  Focus on creating a brand, high quality content and promoting it out across many platforms and social media avenues. Use the twitch platform as a tool to grow your community and to showcase your content.  Also rather then seeing other streamers as competition, try to collaborate with others and find synergies if possible.

How to put your stream on wordpress

Guide on how to put your twitch live stream on wordpress.

A great way to get more viewers to your stream is by embedding.  Here is how to get it onto your wordpress website.

Step 1

Login to your wordpress website and then click on 'My Site".

Step 2

Determine the location of where you want to have your live stream showing. This will vary depending on your layout, widget locations. For this guide we will be placing the stream on the sidebar.

Step 3

Click Appearance, then widgets, add the Custom HTML widget

custom html

Step 4

Enter a Title, I generally use My Channel or Advertisement, then below you add in the embed code from Twitch.

<script src="https://player.twitch.tv/js/embed/v1.js"></script>
<div id="daopastream"></div>
<script>
var options = {
width: 400,
height: 300,
channel: "daopa",
muted:true,
parent: ["twitch-tv-tips.blogspot.com"]
//video: "{v130023526}"
};
var player = new Twitch.Player("daopastream", options);
player.setQuality("360p");
player.addEventListener("play", function(){
console.log("Twitch tv player is ready");
player.setMuted(true);
player.setVolume(0.00);
});
</script>

Make sure to switch out daopa with your Twitch channel name and the parent to your website. Other options you may have to change is the width and height.

When you finish, click save and it should show up on your blog.
